Washing machines can sometimes make really bad decisions.
Take mine, for instance. I keep it well fed with plenty of dirty laundry, and it
faithfully provides the service of cleaning it and returning it to me. Somewhat
damp, of course, but that's okay. So yesterday while doing a moderate sized load
of laundry, the machine decided that it was no longer interested in maintaining
its drain hose connection. (I have a portable washer that hooks up to the
kitchen sink.)
This became a problem during the drain and spin cycle. You see, when a hose
becomes disconnected from its plug, the stuff that travels through the plug no
longer has a channel to its intended destination. In my case, a full load's
worth of water was redirected to my kitchen floor. Not designed for optimal
water retention, the kitchen failed to contain the flood and it slowly made its
way into the dining room.
I was completely oblivious as I was busy trying to build the moon. (Katamari
Damacy. 300 freaking meters!) I eventually got up to get something to drink and
noticed that the carpet in front of the kitchen sloshed when walked upon. This
was clearly not normal carpet behavior.
It took hours to sort things out. By the end of cleanup, I didn't have a single
dry towel in the house.

It sure doesn't help that sometimes the downward pressure from the outflow of water will push the hose out of its receptacle, eh? I used a small wooden wedge to brace ours into place. You probably should think about doing something similar. Unbalanced loads shaking the machine make this sort of thing more likely, as well.
Consider yourself lucky, most people who have a washing machine "incident" end up having an assload of property damage. You may want to consider pulling up that portion of the carpet, or at least directing airflow from fans over it, to dry it out and reduce the number of mold spores that will no doubt find their way into your respiratory system, otherwise.
Good luck!

I can't really pull up the carpet since it's stapled to the floor, but job one after drying it with the towels as best I could was to get a fan going. It has been blowing on that area for two days now. It's a small fan, but it's really all I have.
Otherwise, I do consider myself lucky. Only a small area of carpet got soaked, and the kitchen floor is now very clean.
Oh, and by the way... I ended up successfully making the moon. In the last 10 seconds I went from 200 to 300+ meters.
