I managed to do some sightseeing yesterday here in DC. I went to the Smithsonian Air & Space museum in the morning, then ventured out for a walk and ended up at the Capitol. I took a bunch of pictures at both places, then made the 16 block journey to visit the White House where I took some more pictures. Then I went to the White House Visitors' Center where I watched a 30 minute movie on the building's history, and walked around looking at pictures and reading things.
Little known fact about me: I've always been more than mildly fascinated with the White House. Not only has it stood as a symbol for this country for about as long as the office of the president has existed (in fact, our first president oversaw its construction), it has an amazing history and is just a really cool building.
What sucks is that, while the video documentary has George Bush proclaiming that the White House belongs to the people and that he's "honored its doors are open to you" or some shit, you can't even THINK about walking through those doors without an act of congress. No, seriously. If you want to tour the White House, you need a group of 10+ people and a formal request sent to and approved by your congressional representative.
Things I want to see before I leave next week:
- Lincoln Memorial
- Washington Monument
- Vietnam Veterans Memorial
- Jefferson Memorial
...and a few other things I can't think of at the moment.

Update: By the way... getting into a taxi and saying "White House" is cool as shit.
