Crazy!
That's things, right there. I was in Colorado for most of last week, and not two days after touching back down in Atlanta I got back on a plane for vacation. I'm actually writing this entry from my hotel room in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Yes friends, this year's vacation is already underway and it's to the Caribbean.
What's to say so far? Well, yesterday was pretty much an unwind-and-recover-from-the-flight kind of day where we walked around our hotel's neighborhood and got a feel for the area. Aside from the annoyingly-standard American staples that seem to pepper the island (Chili's, Outback Steakhouse, Subway, etc.), there are, of course, enough small native places to grab you and feed you Puerto Rican style. We took advantage and enjoyed some rice, beans, fried plantains, and chicken.
I also took the opportunity to sample Puerto Rico's native beer, Medalla. It's quite good, actually.
Pleepleus also wanted a drink.
Today started off with an excursion to Fort San Felipe del Morro out in Old San Juan. After doing a whole lot of walking around and throughout the fort, snapping pictures in all the areas, we headed out and over to a place known as Barrachina a place that just happens to be the (alleged) birthplace of the Piña Colada. You can't help but order one with such a claim, and as expected, it was quite tasty. We also decided to sample some local snack foods - croquettes, turnovers, plantains, and fried plantains stuffed with chicken. All was extremely tasty. I in particular enjoyed the sauce for the chicken; not at all spicy, but very flavorful.
After Barrachina, we took a walking tour around Old San Juan to see the colorful neighborhoods, miscellaneous shops, and random historical sights. We then found our way back to the car and headed to a beach we found tucked behind Isla Verde. After spending some time walking along the coast, we headed back to our hotel's neighborhood for some dinner.
Tonight's plan is to attend a monthly art celebration in Old San Juan. The town apparently makes it a habit for its art galleries to open its doors once a month, pour free wine, and let everyone stroll around from gallery to gallery to look at the available art pieces. Not a bad way to spend an evening!
