Holy shit that was interesting.

So I'm sitting at my desk yesterday when my boss walks over and asks me, "Have you thought about how you're going to get here tomorrow? Since I hadn't thought about it more than any other day, I asked him what he meant. That's when he told me there was an ice storm headed our way.

I've been living in Atlanta for almost five years, and there has never been an ice storm in the area during that time. Not sure what to expect, I asked Craig for some clarification as to what was coming. He launched into a faux weatherman spiel, but it did gave me an idea of what's involved with an ice storm. He offered to put me up in a nearby hotel for the night, but I declined since it I think would have been a waste of money.

I woke up this morning, and it was about 55 degrees in my apartment (which isn't bad at all) so I looked out the window and assumed that I'd lucked out on the ice. Unfortunately, by the time I was ready to leave it appeared that I was very wrong. I walked out to my car and noticed that everything around me was completely covered in a layer of ice about a centimeter thick. It took me a while of cranking the defrost in the car to decide a gallon jug of hot water would be better.

Once I had some visibility through my windshield, I started my adventure trek to work. Two ice-covered interstates later, I was at the office, on time. I experienced some sliding, but was able to easily compensate since I'm good at that kind of thing anyway.

For posterity, here's this hour's reading from the Accipiter.org weather center:

outside

  • temperature:
  • 28 ° F

  • winds:
  • 12 MPH E
  • environment:
  • SLEET

(07:07)

Update: I've put up some pictures from the ice storm. This was some fascinating stuff.
