A few weeks ago after reading some stuff about the military on both forums and stories from friends, along with perusing my family's limited military history, I started thinking about joining the military myself.

This wasn't a new thought; I'd actually thought about it several times in the past, but never gave it any serious consideration. This time I thought about it longer. I figured after I get in shape I'd probably consider joining the Air Force. One slow Saturday at work, I started perusing the Air Force website, reading about the requirements for joining, various details of what basic training is like, and other things on what military life is about. I figured the Air Force would suit me best since I like planes and already have a few flight hours of my own.

Then I stopped and realized what, exactly, I was thinking about. I laughed for a few minutes, and promptly closed the window.

Dued. If the Airforce wants to make you a pilot, you should totally do it. If they want to make you a computer security dued, you might want to do that, too. HOWEVER, in order to be an officer, you'll have to get a college degree. Don't go enlisted. N3V4R.

With all the reading I did, I know the requirements. A very important point: The Air Force will not make you a pilot unless you are an officer. You can't be an officer without a college degree.

In any event, it'd be a pretty big waste of time for me personally.

Well, I wouldn't recommend it if it were to be merely a waste of time. However, you could get the college degree on their ticket, firstly, and secondly, if you like flying as much as you like your current job, it wouldn't necessarily be a waste of time. Firstly there's the noble serving-your-country stuff, but secondly, being a pilot is a well-paid career avenue that is not at all a dead-end. My cousin's husband is a 747 (freight) pilot who does pilot training for his company; most of the people he trains are retired AF pilots (not only C140 pilots).

On the other hand, forgoing the pilot path and getting a security clearance and working on security of DOD computers would set you up for great things in your future career. I know you love SecureWorks, but unless you take over the company, eventually you'll probably glass ceiling there.

The thing of it is, in my experience with the Army (as a spouse), is that it better be 100% to your gain to sign up for military service. They're going to hold you to every last point of your end of the contract, and concoct endless bureaucracy and loop holes to get out of meeting their obligations. The AF has a much better name in this regard than does the Army, of course, but if you're going to be at the mercy of some stupid liutenant, you may as well be the stupid liutenant.
