For the first time in a little while, I have updated the travel log with some more locations. I have been planning a camping trip for three years now, and every year something comes along and ruins my plans. There's some sort of curse on that trip, but that's a different story.
Anyway, instead of letting the curse wreck the holiday weekend, Theresa and I decided to take a road trip to some random places. We'd originally decided on Knoxville just because it was relatively close, neither of us have ever been there, and the information on things to do seemed rather interesting. So we packed our stuff and off we went to Knoxville, stopping once along the way for peaches and boiled peanuts. By pure chance on the way there, my friend Steve from down in Pensacola called just to say hey and see what was new. I'd mentioned that I was on my way to Knoxville, and he flipped saying he'd just left Knoxville and was on his way home. We were on the same road about 60 or so miles apart, so we agreed to meet halfway and hang out for a bit.
So we did. At the Athens/Decatur exit. Freaky.
Afterward we continued our journey to Knoxville and had a look around the art museum, the college campus, some shops, etc. Then, based on a recommendation from Steve, we decided to head down to the Gatlinburg area.
Protip: Welcome centers are, more often than not, a ploy to sell you something. Resist the hundred bucks and free breakfast and just keep moving.
We drove through both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg (stopping for the odd souvenir here and there) checking out the area, decided on things we wanted to see the next day, then whipped back around for a round of mini-golf. After that it was a mission to find a hotel room, which turned out to be extremely difficult and frustrating due to it being a tourist trap on a holiday weekend. But hey, we found one. I'm writing this early in the morning from a hotel room just outside Pigeon Forge. Today we explore the rest of this area along with some views of the Smoky Mountains, then we head to Charlotte, NC for some more sights and fun.
And sausage. Delicious, delicious sausage.
