I'm not much a fan of horror movies. Sure, the Jason and Freddy movies scared me when I went to my friend Fitz's house in elementary school with a bunch of friends and watched them, but I was what? 8? 9? Something like that. Watching naked teenagers get graphically butchered by a goon in a hockey mask is bound to rattle anyone under 11.

However the desire to watch such movies quickly faded, as the shock value wore off just as fast. Another mass campground slaying? Fantastic. So it's no surprise that, compounded with the amount of time I watch television (a tremendous 0%), I hadn't heard a whole lot about The Ring. I'd not seen any trailers for it, nor did I even know whom it starred. I had, however, read a news clip on Penny Arcade regarding the movie. Apparently, the movie was jolting enough to make Tycho re-evaluate monster entry points into his home. The resulting comic implied that this was, indeed, something pretty goddamned disturbing. My curiosity was irrevocably engaged.

Upon reading the PA news entry last week, I decided that yep, I'm going to see this movie. I went to see it yesterday with my friend Steve and his wife Jennie. My only prior exposure to this movie was actually viewing "the tape" via a RealMedia file a few weeks ago. (You can check that out over here, which I also found via Penny Arcade. Thanks, guys. Suffice to say, this is a really good movie with lots of dark imagery. This isn't a horror movie in the way that Friday the 13th is a horror movie. This movie is akin to reading a horror novel, as it impacts on a psycological level rather than the brute-force thrills provided by movies like Friday.

7 days, buddy.

Update: I broke a few rules with the new header image I uploaded this morning, but they're my rules, so I'll break them when I feel like it. The sans-serif font I normally use just didn't seem like it would fit with the theme of this particular header image, so I used an 18th century typeface instead. It's much more appropriate.
