This is going to be fun.
I received, in an e-mail account I haven't used for years, a proposal for a transfer of a large sum of funds to my bank account from someone in Spain. Clearly this is a variant of the popular Nigerian "419" e-mail scam, and I'm well aware of that crap. I decided, however, it would be interesting to have a little fun with this scumbag. I wrote up a nice, juicy bait e-mail with which to reply, making them think I was totally on-board and ready to snag my 20% of the promised $12 million (or $8 million, I'm not sure which; the person who pasted the message together is a moron), with just enough trepidation to make my reply seem authentic.
At the same time, I contacted both my local FBI and Secret Service field offices to let them know that I received this message. Today is Sunday, and the Secret Service field office is closed. While someone did answer the phone at the FBI office, however, they were pretty unhelpful. The operator simply told me to "disregard" the message.
Nah. That's too boring. I'm going to string them along for awhile, and waste their time. The more time they spend dealing with me, the less time they'll have to work on some sucker who would fall for this stuff. Plus, while they're on my hook, maybe I can coerce my local federal law-enforcement agencies to take some action. I'm going to call both of them again tomorrow.
