September 14, 2004
A nice blast from the past popped up recently when I dusted off my old Speak
& Spell and Speak & Math units and got them working. I set the Speak
& Math on Word Problems, Level 3 and hit GO, and was shocked at the
difficulty of the problems it spat out.
151 MINUS 30 EQUALS 11 TIMES WHAT.
Now I'm not a moron, and I'm quite capable of figuring out the answer (it's 11
for you actual morons out there), but you have to realize that these
things were aimed at kids ages 6 and older. I'm willing to bet that today's toys
for that age group are a lot more "stupid" per se.
I was also impressed by the word module I had installed in the Speak &
Spell, since it dealt with noun endings. It asks things like SPELL TYPISTS; PLURAL, POSSESSIVE. I'm convinced that if
more kids had these things back when I did, the adults of today wouldn't be
making so many idiotic grammar mistakes.

You know, maybe if I hadn't had a Speak and Spell I'd've been able to spell by now. "Color"... "Neighbor"... WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE AGAINST "U"?

I'd be willing to bet there exists a Britishized version of the Speak & Spell, with words like "Color" and "Neighbor" intentionally misspelled with a u to conform with that crazy language spoken over there.

Yeah yeah, you're not British.
But you speak it.

There's actually extensive documentation indicating that Cesca's British.
But really, it doesn't matter, because her poor country was pumped full of Brits anyhow, so everybody down there talks funny.

WTF? "British" people never amounted to more than 5%, if that, of the population of my country. Everyone down there talks funny because the vast majority of them are not speaking English. Kinda like the United States.
